What is Dental Crown

Dental crowns are immobile prostheses that are placed in between other teeth which can replace missing, discolored, decayed or otherwise unhealthy teeth. They are not able to be removed by the patient themselves, but they are also not as deeply inserted as implants either.

How are Dental Crowns Made

On the first stage, supporting teeth neighboring the extracted tooth, are prepared. They are cleaned from caries and decay. They are measured after reduction. Prostheses are crafted based on the measurements. Testing is performed for each step and each unit in order to make sure that everything is going to work out perfectly. The crown is then attached in a way that pleases both the dentist and the patient.

The dentist’s priority is to craft and place a prosthesis that is as natural looking as possible, with its color, hue, texture and feel. This is a matter of in-depth study for the dentist, who will consult with your desires at every step. If the prosthesis is made shoddily, the effect it might have on the patients quality of life could be too uncomfortable. Not to mention that the aesthetic look of the dental crown is extremely important to provide a natural smile and confidence.

Dental crowns come in different varieties, such as metal-reinforced porcelain crowns, zirconium crowns, empress and porcelain laminates.

Crown vs Veneer

Crowns are more suitable in cases where the patients have had a root canal therapy in the past, resulting in lower tooth mass. Otherwise, if there is any case where veneers must be removed, they can be replaced by crowns. Both crowns and veneers are made from safe biocompatible materials that resemble natural teeth in appearance but may surpass its durability. The priority in choosing between crowns and veneers is to achieve a suitable aesthetic unison with the rest of the teeth. On the other hand, one additional deciding factor may be that crowns usually cost less than veneers.
